Frequently Asked Questions

1.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine old over 3,00 years. It is a flesh-and-bones medicine based on anatomy, that treats “the root” cause of disease. Acupuncture can relieve chronic and acute pain, promote healing and address a wide range of health problems. Acupuncture is extremely safe. It is an all-natural, drug-free therapy, promoting overall healing and well-being.

Acupuncture physicians use hair-thin needles, acupressure, and other modalities to remove the obstructions causing the pain, jump-start the nervous system, and guide the body back to its natural ability to heal and to reach optimal homeostasis.

Modern research confirms stimulation of acupuncture points causes the release of nervous-system chemicals in our brain, spinal cord, and muscles can help restore and regain the body's natural ability to heal.

2.

Does it work?

The World Health Organization has formally proclaimed acupuncture as an effective medical treatment. In 1997, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) endorsed acupuncture, stating: “There is sufficient evidence of acupuncture’s value to expand its use into conventional medicine and to encourage further studies of its physiology and clinical value.” Acupuncture has been around for over 3,000 years and if it didn't work we would not be still using its unmeasurable benefits in treating a wide variety of medical conditions.

What should I expect?

During the initial visit, we will take a full health history, a physical exam and ask questions regarding your health, lifestyle, and symptoms. You will receive a comprehensive diagnosis and a treatment plan, discuss the line of care, and what treatment and modalities will be offered. At Compassion Acupuncture, we take into account your whole self, not just your symptoms, in order to get to the root of your health concerns. At your follow-up visits, we will evaluate the past treatment and the response, note changes, and continue working on the treatment plan.

4.

Does it hurt? Are the needles safe?

At Compassion Acupuncture we use the thinnest needles on the market, which are literally hair-thin and completely bendable. The needles are 100% sterile and immediately disposed of after one use. Depending on your sensitivity, some needles you might not feel at all, while others might feel like a slight prick similar to a mosquito bite that disappears right away. We strive on making our clients feel as comfortable as possible before, during, and after the treatment.

5.

How should I prepare for the session?

If possible, please arrive in loose, comfortable clothing. We also provide gowns for your convenience. Please make sure you have some food in your stomach prior to the treatment. After the treatment, please stay hydrated with plenty of water, eat lightly and try to avoid alcohol and heavy meals in the hours after the treatment. In between the treatments, take notes of any changes that you might be experiencing. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

6.

What other NON-NEEDLE treatment modalities do you offer?

Depending on your treatment plan, we might recommend:

  • CUPPING (Cupping involves placing glass or plastic cups on the body, especially the back. The inside of the cup is first quickly heated to create a vacuum. It is then applied to the skin to form a suction of muscle and tissue. This stimulates strong blood flow to the area, which is helpful for relieving tension and muscle cramps, releasing lactic acid from the muscles to speed up the healing process. The sensation is similar to receiving a deep-tissue massage.

  • LED LIGHT THERAPY / COLD LASER (Originally developed by NASA for astronauts who could become injured or ill on long-term space missions, low-level light therapy / cold laser is FDA cleared and used as a safe and natural method of treating a variety of skin and pain conditions such as acne, anti-aging, wrinkles, and pain.)

  • ULTRASOUND AND E-STIMULATION THERAPY (Our Ultrasound Combo may help to provide relief from the pain associated with arthritis, rheumatism, lumbago, backache, fibromyalgia, tennis/golf elbow pain, etc.)

  • PEMF THERAPY (Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field Therapy) through ADVANCED BIOPRO HEALING MAT that provides 5 healing therapies to promote your healing on cellular level.

7.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments required depends on many factors, such as what is your complaint, how long have you had it, your underlying health, etc. Some conditions might require treatments twice a week for 4 weeks, while other conditions can resolve in 2-3 treatments. Typically, chronic conditions require more treatments to resolve than acute ones. Many of our clients choose to continue their treatments as preventative / maintenance care, as we call it a "tune-up" or "re-charge".
